Sawdust is preferable to straw

20 August 2020

In many riding schools and stables, straw is often still considered as ground cover. The main motivation? Low cost. Yet that appears to be a limited insight. The additional effects make the choice for sawdust attractive.

Let’s start with the effects of straw for a moment. Straw is mainly used as a ground cover for cows, goats, poultry and horses. The absorption capacity is reasonable to good, but it is not very suitable for horses with a dust allergy.

The benefits of sawdust? The sawdust is made from selected coniferous wood. Thanks to the cushioned surface, hooves and joints are less stressed. Thanks to the small wood particles, solid faeces can be separated and manure does not fill up as quickly.
